Going to college....MAC vs. PC...Premiere vs. Final Cut?

The time is coming....I'm college bound soon. Decisions MUST be made.

I've always worked on PCs never with Macs....Macs are generally more expensive....more bang for the buck with a PC......

The thing is, I'll probably be able to use the equipment on campus so I dont know if I'll necesarily need an editing program in my dorm.

Also....I have Vegas Video 3 right now on my PC at home. I use Windows XP btw). Anyways, I keep hearing about these plugins and things available for Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, but NEVER for Vegas Video. I don't have a ton of money to rush out and buy a high end prog like that. Am I underestimating VV3? Besides the plugins available for Premiere is it that much better?

Maybe the answer to your question is in the forum. Look at the number of Windows/Premiere problems. Now also remember that alot of the board members are Mac User's, and then ask yourself why are there no Mac problems discussed.

Now consider Apple make the Computer, the Operating System, and in the case of Final Cut Pro the software.

Also consider that Apple has won many accolades from the Film Industry (FCP won an EMMY most recently) This maybe because its popular in the film industry.

If you were studying computers or IT at college I'd recommend a PC.

if you are doing a degree in film and it involves making your own video then they will most probably have all the gear you could ever need.

Here is my opinion on the PC side of the video editing argument. Firstly as you say they tend to be cheaper, although this depends on what type of video editing setup you want.

I've heard loads of good reports on Vegas Video but never had the opportunity to use it. Premiere is a good editor and comes bundled with most capture cards. Pinnacles Edition DV is excellent software and is what I would recommend. Pinnacle offer educational pricing on Edition so you should be able to pick it up cheaper than normal.

I would also recommend buying a full turnkey system from an authorised dealer. The system will come fully configured and tested, and they will be able to support you if you have any technical problems or general software questions.

as long as your system is stable and you can cut, crossfade and fade to black and do a sound mix, who cares what platform you're on?

VV3 is EXCELLENT in the audio department BTW, much better than Premiere. But you're right -- there are some funky plugins for Premiere not available for VV3. But I'm sure once you are at college you'll find the illegal ftp site on campus full of Adobe warez ....

Yes, when using a PC you'll bang the computer in frustration more often than when using a mac.


Keep in mind that you probably don't want to buy anything unless you buy it on campus. You get insane discounts on computer gear, including macs, if you buy from the campus bookstore and have a student ID.

Ask yourself... will I use the computer for other stuff than editing? If yes.. get a PC.. if no, consider a MAC... if you are very used to PC (windows etc) then getting used to mac can be somewhat anoying

Christian Marcussen shut up you ignoramus, I've had this argument with alot of people, and I'm ready for another one.

By the way the music industry the photography industry the advertising industry and the publishing industry is dominated by the Mac. OK PC can write really good letters but so can typewriters.

And how can someone critisize the Mac operating system. It is so advanced and yet so simple to learn. Please Christian Marcussen shut up your making a fool of yourself.
